Snow in Istanbul

If you are in Istanbul this weekend, be sure to have a scarf and warm jumper at the ready – heavy snow is set to sweep the city on January 5th.

Due to a wave of cold air heading over from the Balkans, temperatures in Istanbul are set to drop below zero from January 5th and set to last up until January 9th with a bout of heavy snowfall thrown in between.

To prepare for the stormy weekend, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has set more than 2,000 workers to be ready with snowploughs, salt and de-ice.  This follows the chaos in Istanbul during the recent snowfall in December 2012 where roads were closed due to hazardous conditions.

The normally standstill city will be a stark contrast this weekend as it is expected that most people will take to staying inside in the warmth.
