Domestic flights within Turkey increase

Data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) show that domestic flights from within Turkey have increased nearly 10 percent.

The quarterly report shows that in the second quarter of 2012 there were a total of 14.6 million Turkish passengers travelling within Turkey, up 9.1 percent when compared with the same period of 2011.

The figures were then broken down into flight categories, with 63.7 percent of passengers taking trips to visit relatives in other regions of Turkey. Holiday and tourism was given as a reason for a further 19.2 percent of flights, while health was the reason given for 8 percent of the total flights.

The data shows that the average stay for passengers was measured at 7.4 nights and the average cost per person was 253 Turkish Liras.

With the increase in flights within Turkey, coupled with the further increase of international flights to and from Turkey, airlines such as the national airline Turkish Airlines are posting better economic results than ever and continuing to expand. Turkey is also in the process of building another airport in Istanbul that will take the load of Ataturk Airport and become the main airport in Turkey.
