Formula 1 could return to Istanbul

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has said that he wants to bring the Istanbul Formula 1 Grand Prix back.

Speaking in an interview, Ecclestone said: “If there is a chance, we would like to hold the Grand Prix once again in Istanbul.

Istanbul Park

Istanbul first hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2005, and continued to do so until 2012 when Turkey decided to withdraw after Ecclestone wanted to double the amount of money it costs to host a Grand Prix from $13 million to $26 million.

Negotiations are still taking place to bring Formula 1 back to Turkey, and if the Istanbul race were to be reignited for 2013, the race would most likely take place in the summer on June 16.

With Istanbul gearing up for a major bid for the 2020 Olympics, sport in the city is set to become more and more important. Hosting a Grand Prix in the city would go a long way to proving Istanbul’s sporting event prowess. It would also give Formula 1 a chance to again race in the only city in the world that is based half on Europe and half on Asia.
