Turkish singer jailed for drug dealing

Famous Turkish pop singer Deniz Seki has been sentenced to six years and three months in prison after being found guilty of drug dealing by the Specially Authorised Istanbul 9th High Criminal Court.

Seki had previously been jailed for 10 months in 2009 for the same offence – police later recorded Seki’s phone conversations in 2010 to uncover whether or not the Turkish singer had been selling drugs. The bugged phone calls revealed that Seki had been in contact with Sinan Yuksel and had been selling drugs to her friends on behalf of Yuksel. Yuksel is currently awaiting the results of a wider police operation which has seen 19 people arrested for supplying and selling drugs.

The pop star has released a total of six albums in Turkey since her debut album in 1997, her last album coming in 2008 – a year before her first sentence for drug dealing.

After being sentenced on Tuesday, Seki’s lawyers announced that the singer intends to appeal the decision immediately.
