Istanbul WTA Championships near, line-up heating up

The WTA Championships will be held in Istanbul this year from October 25th to October 30th.

The year ending championships will see the best eight players of the season battle for the coveted title and share $5 million in prize money. Istanbul has secured rights to hold the championship until 2013.

Chinese player Li Na became the latest player to qualify for the event. Li said: “This year has been the most successful of my career so far and I’m very happy to have qualified. I’m proud to be the first Chinese woman to qualify in singles for this event.”

Li joins already qualified tennis stars Caroline Wozniacki, Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, and Victoria Azarenka. With three spots remaining in one of the most prestigious events of the calendar year in tennis, other players are fighting their way to win the right to compete in the tournament.

The year ending championships will see the winner pick up an extraordinary amount of money; the championships are the culmination of a whole years hard work for the winner. Istanbul has a chance to show the world the potential of Istanbul to host big events. With a bid for the 2020 Olympics finalised, Istanbul will be looking to put on a spectacle of sport so showcase the city’s ability in sporting events. In 9 years’ time, Istanbul could be hosting the Olympic Games.
