Turkey to teach Arabic language in public schools

Turkey’s Ministry of Education has announced the start of a new program that will see Arabic taught to students in Turkey’s public schools.

Merdan Tufan, head of the Ministry of Education’s Executive Board of Discipline, stated that Arabic will become available as a course for students going into the fourth grade through to the eighth grade. Tufan said: “Arabic was added to the curriculum this year so that any student can choose it as an elective course if he or she wants to.”

At the moment, those students who wish to learn Arabic will have to do so without the use of textbooks as Tufan revealed that textbooks teaching Arabic will not be available until next June but other materials will be provided to the students to learn Arabic.

Tufan said that the decision to include Arabic in the curriculum for students was made as Arabic is spoken in many countries neighbouring Turkey and is one of the top six languages spoken at the UN. Tufan said: “Economic and cultural interaction with our neighbours necessitates training qualified personnel in different sectors of the economy to speak Arabic, which is increasingly important for communication.”

Arabic is spoken by more than 350 million people worldwide. The decision to teach Arabic to Turkish students will provide a lot of opportunities for students who learn Arabic. It would also open opportunities for more Arabic speaking nationals in Turkey. The Turkish property market and business markets see lots of Arabic businessmen invest in Turkey. With more and more people in Turkey learning to speak Arabic, we could see more and more Arabs investing in Turkey.
