Turkish scientist gets award from US president

Aydogan Ozcan, Assistant Professor of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has been named as one of the 94 winners of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers.

Professor Ozcan received the award due to his development of a new microscope that works alongside a mobile phone. The device is designed to take blood and saliva samples. Costing only 10 dollars, the device is used in developing countries where the healthcare system is not as developed as the developed world to detect diseases.

The professor is the current head of the Bio- and Nano-Photonics Laboratory at UCLA. The Turkish born professor currently holds 17 patents for his inventions and has previously won awards such as the 2010 National Geographic Emerging Explorer Award and last year was chosen as one of the top 10 innovators by the US Department of State.
