US Secretary of State urges Israel to reconcile with Turkey

It has been reported that US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has stressed the importance to Israel of reconciliation with Turkey during her talks with Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak.

The Turkish-Israeli relations were damaged last year after a raid on the Mavi Marmara by Israeli naval commandos. The ship was carrying humanitarian aid to Garza and nine Turkish civilians were left dead.

Turkey demanded an official apology from Israel for the attacks and compensation for the families of the victims involved. Israel has contested that the soldiers were acting in self-defence.

Barak had been at the White House with Vice President Joe Biden and National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, it has been reported that Barak is a supporter of reconciliation with Turkey whilst other members of the Israeli coalition are against it.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has suggested that an apology to Turkey is humiliating and will pave a way for the Israeli soldiers to face lawsuits.

Clinton has been very favourable towards Turkey of late. She recently stated how well the Turkish economy is doing and praised the 11 percent growth that Turkey obtained and stated that other countries in the region could look towards Turkey for support.
