Will Ankara’s subway ever materialise?

It’s been going on for ten years and taken 814 million Turkish Liras in investments but Ankara’s subway system is yet to be completed.

Turkey’s transport ministry have recently announced the project will receive another 3.1 billion liras investment boost.

Subway work between Keçiören and the train station, Kızılay and Ümitköy, as well as between Sincan and Batıkent will be launched simultaneously and completed within two years, according to the ministry’s plans. But the construction has been going on for so long that it is hard to believe the ministry’s time frame is realistic.

Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek has repeatedly said the capital city’s subway project would be completed as soon as possible since it first began in 2001, but little progress has been made in recent years.
